Ellen explained it best when she said "Beauty is not between a size 0 and a size 8, it is not a number at all, it is not physical.". I believe that Michael Jeffries should hear this message face to face because apparently he believes in the complete opposite of this philosophy, he believes it is okay to publicly choose who is cool and who is uncool because of their outer appearance, and even goes as far as to clearly admitting his own brand is absolutely exclusionary. I believe Michael Jeffries' view is completely outrageous and is surprising considering the efforts of so many to achieve equality in the world today. What surprised me even more was how open he was about this and how he clearly didn't realize how morally wrong his view was. Michael Jeffries' view on who should wear Abercombie and Fitch's clothing is completely wrong, and only shows the shallowness he has towards judging people by their outer appearance. He even goes as far as saying that these people don't belong and that they can't belong, which is a ridiculous state of mind that only leads to negative emotions and destroys all the hard work everyone has put into ensuring everyone is treated equal. Michael Jeffries' views show an outstanding amount of shallowness, mistreatment, and such a carelessness towards others that does not show any sign of good morals or values.
It is not equitable to target a particular group of teens because this only contributes to the idea that everyone is different from each other and should be treated differently because of each of their unique appearances. It works against equality and only makes people feel as if they are worth less than others when in all reality everyone should be treated equally and everyone should be treated with respect regardless of the way they look on the outside.
This issue contributes to our already biased perception of beauty by following the message the media has been feeding into our brains for years on end. It contributes to those skinny or muscular models seen on television and on advertisements, and forces on us what the media believes an ideal person would look like. The media is constantly trying to tell us how we should look like, act like, and even dress like. The views of Michael Jeffries only contribute to this idea when really we shouldn't have to be concerned with following the media's idea of an ideal person. We shouldn't follow this because they only judge people from their outer appearance and never really consider how a person is really like. Because of this superficial attitude both views from the media as well as from Michael Jeffries both contribute greatly to each other, but we must ensure that their contributions do not get any bigger because it is a wrong way of thinking about things and doesn't really consider people as wholes. We must work against this biased perception of beauty to ensure that everyone feels as if they are equals and no one feels as if they are less than those around them just because of their outer appearances.
